Entering into God’s Presence is not easily done. The problem is not trying to get God to show up. He is already Present by His Spirit. The problem is getting past our soulish demands for the attention of our “needs.” The practice of fasting heightens this challenge brought by the soul… so that we may learn discipline to submit our soul and body to the desires of the Holy Spirit within us. So, fasting is not about moving God to us, but moving us to God. Fasting is not required… just a discipline to help us govern the soul by the Spirit of Christ within us. Thus, we properly practice such a discipline by grace for discipline’s sake.
So, entering into God’s Presence requires our focus upon God… who He is… His characteristics of love, mercy, grace, kindness, and all that is good in God’s nature. That is why we often close our eyes… so that what we see that stimulates the soul is closed off, while we allow ourselves to focus upon God. This is not easy, and it does not just happen in a moment for almost all of us. We must learn to quiet our souls (and the demands of the body) while we enter into His Presence. God is there, awaiting our attention… for us to simply enjoy His Presence. At such a “place” we do not demand anything from God, but rather give our full attention to Him… who He is, how He sees, what His heart is all about.
This is easily stated from an objective point of view. In other words, I can write this down so much easier than to practice. However, that is not an excuse to stop in the moment of life and to enter into His Presence. We can do this… all we need to do is to start trying and be determined to succeed by HIS GRACE! This is never a soulish endeavor. We can’t force ourselves into God’s Presence. Rather, it is quieting the soul so that the Spirit may permeate our consciousness.
Wow… that’s good what I wrote… but oh so much better to experience! Let’s go there… as in the Psalmist refrain… “I was glad when they said, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’” The house of the Lord was the “place” in the old covenant where the people recognized where the Presence of the Lord existed. In the new covenant this “place” is within us by the Holy Spirit. Every true believe has access to the Presence of the Lord. It is the reality of our relationship with God through Christ our Lord. What then are we waiting for?
